How difficult is the Tavolara Via Ferrata?
The route is divided into two sections. The first part is a moderately demanding hike, suitable for people who are fit and in good physical condition. The second part features a short easy-level via ferrata, which can also be tackled by beginners, provided they do not suffer from vertigo. Overall, the excursion should be considered physically demanding, but it represents the easiest route to reach Punta Cannone, the highest point of Tavolara Island.
How long does it take to reach Punta Cannone?
Generally, groups take about 3 hours to ascend and 3 hours to descend. Of course, this may vary depending on the overall fitness of the group and on weather conditions (high temperatures make the route more demanding). At the summit of Punta Cannone, a break of approximately 30 minutes is planned for lunch and rest. At the end of the excursion, there is also the possibility to stop at Spalmatore di Terra beach to relax and enjoy the sea.
TOUR DESCRIPTION:
The Island of Tavolara is a majestic limestone mountain rising 565 meters above sea level. It is a pearl of Gallura, located in one of the most spectacular sea straits in the Mediterranean. Tavolara appears like a mountain fallen from the sky, suspended between the deep blue sea and white clouds.
After about one and a half hours of hiking, we reach a place called Pratone. From this incredible natural terrace, you can enjoy breathtaking views over the Gulf of Olbia. Pratone is accessible by following an equipped route known as a Via Ferrata. It is absolutely necessary to have a via ferrata kit, helmet, and harness.
Although technical equipment is required, the route is suitable for anyone who is reasonably fit and does not suffer from vertigo. Participants who do not feel confident tackling the via ferrata can wait for the group at Pratone.
After the via ferrata, we reach Punta Cannone, the highest point of the island. From here, the panoramic view stretches from Capo Coda Cavallo to the Gulf of Olbia, all the way to Corsica and the Strait of Bonifacio—truly unforgettable. At the summit of Tavolara, we take a 30-minute break, ideal for enjoying a packed lunch.
After the break, we begin the descent. At the end of the day, there will be time to relax by the sea and enjoy a refreshing swim on Tavolara’s beach.
